A Chesapeake man has been charged with felonious homicide more than a week after his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
Police charged Phillip A. Lewis, 35, of the 1500 block of Seaboard Ave. on Monday. Lewis already was being held without bond at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center on charges of attempted malicious assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Lewis was arrested Nov. 12 after his wife, Janice Lewis, 28, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in the 400 block of South Military Highway. Janice Lewis was hit at about 4:15 p.m. after jumping out of a car she was riding in with her husband and two others, police said.
Police think Phillip Lewis got into a dispute with one of the other occupants of the car - his wife's brother, William Kinley Jr., 22 - and fired a shot that shattered the rear window of the car. Janice Lewis then jumped out of the car, police believe, and was struck by the hit-and-run driver. Police have not identified the driver.
On Nov. 12, Lewis was charged with assaulting Kinley.
After an investigation of more than a week, Phillip Lewis was charged Monday because his actions while committing a felony contributed to his wife's death, said Mike Carey, spokesman for the Virginia Beach Police Department.
