Police have issued warrants for a man they believe fatally shot an 18-year-old outside a nightclub early Sunday morning.
Cleon Marcia Avery, also known as ``Lockit,'' is being sought in the slaying of Gabriel L. Cooper of Hampton. Cooper and three other people were shot during a dispute at about 2:30 a.m. outside the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Hall in Newport News after a dance. As many as 60 rounds of ammunition were fired, police said.
Copper was one of those involved in the dispute, but the other three hit by bullets were bystanders. The men were treated for minor injuries at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Bill Roth, spokesman for the Newport News Police Department, said Avery, 21, is considered armed and dangerous. A specially trained force of 12 detectives and officers is searching for Avery, Roth said.
Warrants for murder and a firearms charge have been issued for Avery, who is described as black, 6 feet tall and 190 pounds.
