NEWPORT NEWS MAN ACCUSED IN FATAL SHOOTING

Police on Tuesday arrested a 19-year-old man and charged him with murder and a weapons violation in connection with the fatal shooting of a Hampton man Sunday morning.

Kasine Powers of the 500 block of Logan Place was arrested without incident at his home, said Bill Roth, spokesman for the Newport News Police Department.

Two other men are being sought in the slaying of Gabriel L. Cooper, 18, who was shot along with three other men during a dispute outside the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Hall at 7812 Warwick Blvd.

Cooper died. The three other men were treated for minor wounds at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.

Still at large are 21-year-old Cleon Marcia Avery, also known as ``Lockit,'' and William E. Bolton, 21.

Avery is known to frequent the area around the 900 block of 20th St. and the intersection of 20th Street and Wickham Avenue. Bolton's last known address was in the 800 block of 28th St.

Avery was described as 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. Bolton was described as 6 feet tall and 175 pounds. Both should be considered armed and dangerous, Roth said.

Police believe that about 60 gunshots were fired about 2:30 a.m. outside the union hall early Sunday. Cooper is believed to have been involved in the dispute, but the wounded men were innocent bystanders, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 247-2500.
