SHEDDING NEW LIGHT: Navy officials are spending more than $50 million to change their light bulbs in Hampton Roads in hopes they won't have to do it so often from now on. That's the tab for carrying out a Navy order designed to save 30 to 40 percent on lighting costs. A key provision of the plan is replacing the standard 4-foot fluorescent bulb with one that produces about 8 percent less light but is cheaper and quieter. The number of bulbs and fixtures being replaced is unknown, but at one command alone - the Norfolk Fleet Industrial Supply Center - the estimate is 40,000.
ROTC INSTRUCTOR HONORED: Army Master Sgt. Kerry D. Johnson, an Old Dominion University ROTC instructor, will be presented the Soldier's Medal in ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. today for heroic actions July 23, 1993. He and another man pulled a trapped motorist from a burning car moments before it exploded near Fayetteville, N.C. The medal, the second-highest peacetime award for heroism a service member may receive, will be awarded to Johnson in Room 104 of ODU's Old Administration Building.
MORE BIG CARDS: Hampton Roads sends holiday greetings in a big way to soldiers at sea. On the heels of a greeting card signing at Military Circle mall this month comes the annual greeting card signing sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Anyone wishing to send greetings to sailors at sea can sign one of 15 4-foot-tall cards on display through Sunday at Waterside in downtown Norfolk. The cards will be sent to the ships of the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower battle group and to personnel at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba.
