A 23-year-old man has been charged with 16 counts of sexual abuse for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister during the time he lived in a home with them, police said Tuesday.
Herbert T. Hammitt Jr. was charged late Friday. The children were allegedly assaulted several times between April and November, police spokesman Mike Carey said. Hammitt, who was in jail Tuesday on $50,000 bail, was renting a room from the children's mother.
Police were alerted after the boy told a relative about the alleged assaults.
Hammitt has been charged with 15 counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of attempted forcible sodomy. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
