For many of us, the initial shock and horror of Susan Smith's crime has ebbed.
For most of us, disbelief continues.
As a parent of two toddlers, I simply cannot fathom a world in which a mother would destroy the very lives that she brought into this world.
Our children are our brightest hope, our greatest reminder that we have a responsibility to leave this world a better place than it was when we arrived here.
Unfortunately, in this society that condoned the ``me first'' syndrome, we have apparently reached the point at which the phrase refers to even our own children.
Too many Susan Smiths exist in our world.
Too many parents forget that nothing in life is more important, nothing is to be treasured more, than the safety and happiness of our children.
Although I, like most of America, have questioned repeatedly now she could do such a thing, I realize that I never truly want to understand Susan Smith. She lives in a world that I never care to know.
