NORCOM PLACES 11 PLAYERS ON ALL-PORTSMOUTH FOOTBALL TEAM

NORCOM'S RUDY HOWARD has been selected as the city's outstanding high school football player for the 1994 season.

Howard, a 6-2, 192-pound senior, is one of only three players who were chosen on both the offensive and defensive first teams of the All-Portsmouth squad selected by the coaches.

The other two-way picks are his Norcom teammate Octavius Brothers and Wilson's Darrius Edwards.

The all-city squad has a 26-player roster, 13 on offense and 13 on defense. It has 19 seniors, six juniors and one freshman. The ninth-grader is Wilson quarterback Terrance Winston.

City champion Norcom dominated the first unit with seven on defense and four on offense. Churchland placed five on offense, four on defense. Wilson had four on offense, two on defense.

Howard, Brothers and Edwards are among six first-team repeaters. The other holdovers are Wilson's Shawn Oliver and Norcom's Richard Deberry and Richard Spruill.

The lone holdover on the all-city offensive line is Oliver, a guard. The new faces include Churchland center Derrick Brown, Churchland guard Andy Thompson, Norcom tackle Dion Turner, Churchland tackle Sheldon Barnes and Wilson tight end Dvorah Crocker. Barnes was a second-team pick last year.

Edwards had very similar statistics in his two years as one of the first-team wideouts. Last year he set a school record with 53 receptions. This season he had 44 catches for 483 yards.

The versatile Brothers did everything at Norcom - rushing for 158 yards, returning punts, intercepting passes and scoring four touchdowns - but he still found time to haul in six passes for 120 yards.

Winston, the No. 2 passer in the Southeastern District and No. 6 in the area, threw for 961 yards and seven touchdowns, completing 83 of 188 passes.

The three running backs accounted for 2,418 yards rushing. Scott topped the district with 1,183 yards in 167 carries and scored 10 touchdowns. Hawkins gained 665 yards in 126 attempts and had 10 touchdowns. Howard netted 570 yards in 83 assignments, scoring 12 times.

Tynch was elevated from last year's second team as the kicker. He converted 26 extra points.

The defensive unit is one of the smallest in recent years with only three players over 200 pounds. The heavyweights are downlinemen Jermaine Bullock (265) and Lavar Bowers (245) of Norcom and end Demarte Franklin (205) of Churchland.

The other downlinemen are holdover Spruill and Churchland's Korey Lewis, up from last year's second team.

Churchland's Franklin and Norcom's Kevin Mapp also were elevated from last year's second team as defensive ends.

Brothers was the first-team punter last year but went to the second unit this season. He was boosted from a second-team defensive backfield berth as a No. 1 team linebacker. Deberry also was shifted on the first team, gaining a spot last year as a downlineman and moving to linebacker.

The other linebacker is Churchland's Stephen White.

With Howard and Edwards in the defensive secondary is Churchland's Mike Holland.

Holland also was picked as the second unit quarterback. The second team included 12 from Norcom, nine from Churchland and five from Wilson. MEMO: (Ed. note - The All-Southeastern District team, picked by the coaches

of the eight schools, will be announced next week in the Thursday/Friday

Currents.)
