VA. BEACH TEENAGER IN VIRGINIA STAGE COMPANY'S `PETER PAN'

The holidays are often a season when young people are involved in the arts. William R. Rice, 13, an eighth-grader at Virginia Beach Middle School, plays the part of Second Twin in the Virginia Stage Company's current musical ``Peter Pan.''

William is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and also studies voice and acting at the Old Donation School for the Gifted and Talented. He lists two Virginia Opera productions and three Commonwealth Musical Stage shows to his credit.

Based on James M. Barrie's play, ``Peter Pan,'' a musical about eternal boyhood, pirates, children who fly, a crocodile, Indians and, of course, Tinkerbell is entertainment for the whole family. Tickets range from $10 to $30. For information about the show, which continues through Dec. 11, call 627-1234. Also, for the hearing-impaired, one sign-language interpreted performance of ``Peter Pan'' is set for Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Seating near the interpreter is available upon request.

THE OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY BALLET is welcoming back ballet dancer Ryan Martin for its run of Tchaikovsky's ``The Nutcracker.'' Martin, a former Virginia Beach resident, studied dance locally and in Canada and Russia. He and another guest dancer, Chika Temma, are currently with the Makarov Company in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The holiday favorite is at the Pavilion Theater on Dec. 3 and 4 and at Norfolk's Chrysler Hall on Dec. 10 and 11. It is accompanied by the Virginia Symphony and a children's chorus, with special guest conductor, Simon Gabor from the Hungarian State Opera. Tickets are from $10 to $22. Call 428-8000 or 441-2161.

FOR THOSE WITH THEIR EYES set toward the stage, the Virginia Opera is announcing auditions for its children's chorus. Assistant artistic director and interim chorus master, Jerome Shannon, will be holding tryouts for children 8 to 15 on Dec. 5 and 6 at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk. The children's chorus will be featured in the company's world premiere production of ``Simon Bolivar'' by Thea Musgrave.

The auditions are open to the public. For more information or to set a time, call 627-9545, Ext. 300.

FINALLY, A JUST-FOR-FUN ART CONTEST is in progress at Cox Cable television. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to create a picture about the weather. Students may enter one picture only - a drawing, coloring or painting - depicting some weather scene. Winners will be televised live around the country on Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. on the Weather Channel. The teacher of the winning students will receive a VCR for their classroom.
