KING COX JR.

Marion King Cox, Jr., known as King, age 52, a prominent official at the Texas Department of Human Services, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1994, at St. Davids Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Mr. Cox was born in Newport News, and earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Florida State University. In 1973, he began 21 years of public service to needy Texans as a food stamp caseworker in Houston. During the next two decades, he was given increasing responsibility in a wide range of positions. He served as the Assistant Regional Administrator for a region covering nearly two dozen Southeast Texas counties. In 1990, he moved to Austin to serve as the Director of Eligibility Programs. Throughout his public service, he was known for both his compassion for the people he served and his fellow workers as well as determination to solve problems.

He is survived by a sister, Jo Ann Gillingham of Fort Myers, Fla., a nephew, Mark Gillingham and his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Hali, of Miami, Fla. Other family members include uncle, William A. Cox Jr. and cousins, William A. Cox III of Virginia Beach, Michael H. Cox of Portland, Ore., and John H. Cox of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. in First United Methodist Church of Austin at 12th St. and Lavaca St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the American Cancer Society or AIDS Services of Austin.
