ALFRED A. SCHARBIUS

Alfred A. Scharbius, M.D., died on Nov. 20, 1994, at his residence at 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach. He was 83.

He earned a B.S. degree at the University of Vermont in 1932 and a medical degree at Cornell University Medical College in 1935. After 5 1/2 years of hospital training in general surgery, he practiced from 1941 in New York City; Smithtown, L.I.; Freeport, Bahamas; Lymington, England, and after returning to the U.S. in Hampton and Williamsburg, until his retirement in 1978.

He served as attending surgeon on the staff of numerous hospitals in New York and overseas, including Director of Surgery at Smithtown General Hospital and Acting Chief for Outpatient Service at the VA Center, Hampton.

During World War II, after initial assignment to Portsmouth Naval Hospital, he served destroyer duty in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean in 1942. He attended the School of Aviation, Pensacola, Fla., and received his wings as a Naval Flight Surgeon and saw combat action in the Solomons Campaign. He retired from active duty with the rank of Lt. Cmdr. (MC) USNR in 1946.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, a regional director of the American Cancer Society, a member of Delta Psi and Nu Sigma Nu fraternities, Smithtown Lions Club, Port Jefferson Yacht Club and the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, a FAA Senior Medical Examiner, Chief Surgeon, Suffolk County (L.I.) Policy Department. In addition to his professional activities, he was an ardent sportsman, writer and world traveler.

Dr. Scharbius leaves no surviving family members.
