Mark Warner, chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, reminds me of someone whistling while walking past the graveyard. His claim that Virginia Democrats won ``solid victories'' does not give an accurate picture. In his first senatorial election race, in 1988, Charles S. Robb took 71 percent of the vote. This time, he barely squeaked by. More votes were cast against Robb than for him.
The net result of the 1994 elections in Virginia: U.S. Senate, no change; U.S. House of Representatives, a gain of one seat for the Republicans and a corresponding loss of one seat for the Democrats. Virginians did not reject the nationwide Republican trend.
