GRIDLOCK AHEAD

Gridlock in national government has gotten worse in the past 50 years, but no one has proposed anything to solve it.

When Republicans won both houses in 1946, the Chicago Sun suggested that Mr. Truman resign as president to be succeeded by a Republican. Mr. Truman did not resign, and the next two years were of constant conflict.

The Soviet Union was too weak to take advantage of our paralysis, but we continue to live in a dangerous world. It may even be more complex now that we don't have a lone enemy with the resources of the Soviet Union. Now there are many places of varying danger to us.

Our present system permits both sides to say that it's the other party's fault that nothing was accomplished.

We will go through the next two years complaining about ``gridlock,'' but no one will propose changing our system of government.
