HUNGER BELIES OTHER ILLS

Many Americans had no Thanksgiving feast. According to Causes of Hunger: Hunger 1995, an annual report on the state of world hunger released by Bread for the World Institute, 30 million people in the United States cannot afford enough food to maintain good health. Twelve million U.S. children under age 18 are hungry.

How can people be hungry in a country of such abundance? This report links hunger with other social ills, such as violence, powerlessness, poverty and discrimination. Therefore, progress on hunger and these other social ills depends on a return to humanitarian values. Eliminating this widespread hunger is feasible and affordable.

What to do? In addition to donating money to a charity or serving at a soup kitchen, we can share our concern with elected officials. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I urge everyone to write a letter to Congress in support of ending hunger and making hunger a political priority.

Some traditions need to be changed. How we address the causes of hunger is one of them.
