LIGHTED BOAT PARADE PUTS HOLIDAY SPIRIT ON THE RIVER

The Elizabeth River will become a stage this evening when more than 80 decorated vessels take part in the Norfolk Lighted Boat Parade.

More than 40,000 spectators are expected to watch the parade from the Norfolk and Portsmouth sides of the river.

Pre-parade festivities will begin at 5 p.m., and the parade will start at 6 p.m.

Fireworks, choreographed to holiday music, will follow at 7:15.

A dockside party at the amphitheater outside Waterside - featuring jugglers, musical groups, a fire-eater and food vendors - will start at 7:30.

The parading boats range in size from 21 feet to 110 feet.

Boaters spend an average of $500 apiece on decorations.

They and their vessels will compete for 10 awards, which will be decided by a panel of nine judges.

The event is free and open to the public.

It is produced by the Downtown Norfolk Council.
