ELIZABETH CITY State University's annual Tipoff Tournament, set for Dec. 2 and 3, will have an added twist this year. The school has invited back its first CIAA championship team of 1969 for a 25th anniversary reunion and some much overdue accolades.
On Friday, Dec. 2, ECSU will face Allen University and St. Augustine's will take on Barber-Scotia.
In women's action, the Lady Vikings, North Carolina Central, St. Paul's, and Savannah State will tangle. The women's championship game will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and the men's championship will begin at 9 p.m.
As for the reunion weekend, the 1969 championship team, which included NBA and ABA star Mike Gale, will be on hand to get championship rings 25 years later.
According to ECSU head coach Claudie Mackey, no rings were given to the championship team that year.
The ring ceremony for the 1969 team will take place on Saturday night. by CNB
