FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR WILL LECTURE AT TCC ON CHINA'S SOCIAL ISSUES

A Chinese Fulbright scholar will bring his perspective on China's current social issues to the campuses of Tidewater Community College.

Wang Wei, an English professor from Beijing Broadcasting Institute, is scheduled to teach a course titled ``Social Issues in Contemporary China, a Journalist's Perspective,'' during the spring semester at TCC.

Class hours are 7 to 9:45 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Portsmouth Campus; 4:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays at Norfolk Center; 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the Chesapeake Campus; and 7 to 9:45 p.m. on Thursdays at the Virginia Beach Campus.

The Chinese institute is a four-year university affiliated with China's Ministry of Radio, Film and Television.

Wang, who also has been editor-in-chief of the English news program on China Radio, will discuss the impact of China's economic reform on employment, the younger generation and family life.

Besides teaching at TCC, Wang will be available to give presentations to area community groups and schools.

This will be Wang's third visit to TCC. He had lectured for three months at TCC's Portsmouth campus in 1993 on China's history and culture.

In April 1994, Wang accompanied two officials from the Beijing institute to TCC and helped the two schools reach a faculty-exchange agreement. According to the agreement, TCC will send a faculty member to teach at the institute every other year beginning in spring 1995. In return, the institute will send a faculty member to TCC.

Wang's visit is not part of the faculty-exchange agreement. He is sponsored by a Fulbright Scholar in Residence grant obtained by TCC.

Barbara Hund, Ed.D., an English and broadcasting professor at TCC's Portsmouth campus, is the coordinator of the grant. Hund said it's unusual that a community college is given such a grant.

Hund has helped to facilitate the previous visits of Wang and the institute's officials. Actually, she became acquainted with Wang when she taught broadcasting at the Foreign Language Department of the Beijing institute from 1988 to 1989. by CNB
