Teacher Mark Bland will be teaching 100 students at Bayside High all the right moves this year with a $4,000 grant from the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education that will support ``Chess for Cognitive Development.''
The grant from the Foundation, created by the National Education Association in 1969, is one of 22 Student Success Grants given to school teachers across the country to promote the academic success of at-risk students. Bland's goal is to use chess to improve students' self-confidence, reasoning skills and levels of concentration. by CNB
