STRANGE DEMOCRATIC DEFINITIONS

Mark R. Warner, chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia, proves that the Democratic Party is desperate to claim victory for something in 1994 (Another view, Nov. 18).

Although Republicans won both houses of Congress, he claims that Virginia Democrats were the winners. Of what? All of the ``winners'' were incumbents with name recognition and campaign money subsidized by taxpayers. Now Virginians will suffer the effects of having most of their congressmen and one senator in the minority party.

Mr. Warner's claim that Virginia is a mainstream, moderate state committed to fiscal conservatism and mainstream values promoted by the Democrats bothers me. Saying that Virginians are mainstream means they are willing to go along with the agenda of President Clinton. Is this the direction Virginians like?

I do not think most Virginians are willing to be ``tolerant'' (as Mr. Warner phrases it) of such mainstream values as abortion, homosexuality, drug legalization and socialized health care.

Instead, Christian values such as belief in God, two-parent families, love for fellow man and compassion for the poor define what Americans would like to see.

It won't be long until the next election, and we will see which direction the American people would like to see this country take. I hope Virginians will wake up by 1996.
