Manley Hartwell Hughes, 71, of 1606 U.S. 17 North, died Saturday in Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Bertie County, a member of the Capeharts' Baptist Church, a World War II Army veteran, and a retired farmer. Mr. Hughes was the son of the late James Willie and Alice Hughes of Merry Hill.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Warren Hughes of Merry Hill; a daughter, Linda H. Keeter of Edenton, N.C.; a son, Ray Hughes of Windsor; three sisters, Tressie Walston of Edenton and Betsy Smith and Peggy Byrum, both of Elizabeth City; a brother, Sidney Hughes of Merry Hill; three grandchildren, Terri Anne Evans and April Keeter, both of Edenton and Penny Hughes of Windsor, N.C.; and one great-grandson, Holden Hughes of Windsor.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Capeharts' Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Williams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at their home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Capeharts' Baptist Church or to the Mid-Way Merry Hill Fire Department. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge of arrangements.
