HANK HANKINS

James ``Hank'' Hankins, of the 600 block of Roland Drive in Norfolk, died Saturday at his residence with his family at his side.

Mr. Hankins was born in Darlington, S.C. He was the owner of one of the most successful independent body shops in Norfolk: Hanks Body and Fender Works since 1960. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lumberton, N.C. He was past treasurer of American Legion Post 60.

Hank Hankins was this area's premier drag racing promoter. He was part owner of Suffolk Raceway, which held many national events in the '60s and '70s. He also owned Langley Speedway in Hampton, and ended his racing promoting career with Creeds Raceway in Virginia Beach.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia R. Hankins; his seven sons, Donald S. Hankins, James R. Hankins Jr., David K. Hankins, Brian K. Hankins and Charles L. Hankins, all of Norfolk, Darrell J. Hankins, USAF, PAFB Florida and William Steven Hankins of Norfolk; and two daughters, Myra J. Smith of Chesapeake and Karen M. Hankins of Norfolk; 14 grandchildren; and his dog ``Snowball.''

A funeral service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. James Cobb. Burial will be in Forest Lawn. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
