EDENTON EXPANDS CANDLELIGHT TOUR OF HISTORIC HOMES BOYS' CHOIR WILL KICK OFF DECEMBER HOLIDAY CELEBRATION.

Organizers hope added homes and a major publicity push will create a big draw for the annual Christmas Candlelight Tour of historical homes Dec. 10-11.

``We have done a lot of advertising,'' said Susan Creighton, a member of the Edenton Historical Commission and chairwoman of the tour. ``It's just the biggest all-out effort we've done. Each year it has gotten bigger. I think there is more enthusiasm for it.''

Historic Pembroke Hall and an ornate newer home known as the Castle are on a list of 13 homes on the tour, which has been running since 1981. Visitors will be treated to holiday decorations and historic tales at each stop.

``Everything is in town, except for the Castle,'' Creighton said. ``You can get out of your car and walk to all the houses. These are all privately owned homes. I think that's the big drawing card.''

Proceeds from the $15 tickets will be used by the historical commission to renovate the Barker House on the Edenton waterfront, organizers said. The house once served as the town's visitor center.

Kicking off Edenton's weekend holiday celebration is the American Boy choir of Princeton, N.J., which will perform in Swain Auditorium Dec. 9.

The group has performed on national television as well as in the White House, Carnegie Hall, the Vatican and Westminster Abbey. The concert is sponsored by the Chowan Arts Council.

Other events for the weekend include decorations, displays and entertainment at the Cupola and Iredell houses, caroling on the green at the Old Chowan County Courthouse and a ``Parade of Lights'' on the waterfront. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
