WEEKEND SHOOTINGS KILL 2, BADLY HURT 3

Two people were killed and three others were critically injured in a series of unrelated shootings Saturday and Sunday.

In Hampton, cabbie David Mancil, 46, was found dead about 9:10 p.m. in his taxi by a passerby in the 3800 block of Chesapeake Ave.

Sgt. Charles Jordan, a police spokesman, said Mancil picked up his last fare at LaSalle Avenue and Shell Road.

Mancil lived in the 400 block of Ford Road.

Police said they have no motive or suspect and asked that anyone with information call police at 727-6111 or Crime Line at 722-9800.

In Norfolk, two people were shot at one location; then each was taken by private car to a different location.

Police spokesman Larry Hill said the shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Dennison Ave. in Chesapeake Manor.

The victims were identified as Michael Riddick, 29, of the 1000 block of Ave. E., who died of his injuries, and Anita Williams, 24, of the 1800 block of Montclair Ave.

Riddick was driven to a supermarket at Johnstons Road and Sewells Point Road, where he died.

Williams, who was shot in the back of her head, was taken to Ave. J and Sewells Point Road. She was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Sunday night.

Police have no motive in the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Line at 441-5100.

In Virginia Beach, about 10 p.m. Saturday, shooting broke out in the home of Allan R. and Susan Daughtrey in the 1800 block of English Court in Maple Bay Townhomes.

Allan Daughtrey, 27, was shot several times. He was in critical condition Sunday night at Virginia Beach General Hospital. Susan Daughtrey, 26, was shot once in a thigh. She was treated and released.

Police said they were looking for three black male suspects whom Allan Daughtrey may have allowed into the home.

Allan Daughtrey was downstairs when the shooting occurred. His wife was upstairs with their three children - ages 7 months and 4 and 6 years - and a 5-year-old friend of the family.

When Susan Daughtrey heard the shots, she ran downstairs and was shot by one of the men who was carrying a semiautomatic handgun. The three men were last seen driving away in a gray or blue Pontiac Grand Am or Chevrolet Cavalier.

Virginia Beach police spokesman Mike Carey said police have no motive. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at 427-0000.

Another Virginia Beach shooting occurred late Sunday morning, and stemmed from a dispute that started over a game of pool, according to the mother of the man charged in the case.

Carey said police were called to the 1600 block of Wicomico Lane in Brigadoon Pines at 11:16 a.m. When they arrived, a resident, Kenneth W. Allen, 31, said he had shot one of three men who had come to his home and threatened him and his family.

The injured man had been picked up by his companions, who then drove away.

A few minutes later, the three men drove up to a police car at Kempsville and Princess Anne Road and sought help. The injured man, identified as Edward O'Neil Speight, 26, of the 200 block of Paladin Drive, was taken to the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was listed in critical condition Sunday night.

Allen was charged with malicious assault and use of a firearm while committing a felony. He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bond.

Police said they are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. ``It's purely over a dispute from a fight that previously occurred,'' Carey said.

The suspect's mother, Myra Allen, defended her son's actions Sunday. ``He was trying to protect his family,'' she said.

Allen said her son and Speight played pool Friday night at a club on Little Creek Road in NorfolkHer son won several of the games - and the bets that had been placed on them. A fight followed.

About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, she said Speight showed up at her front door demanding to see her son. ``He told me to my face, `If I ever find your son, I'm going to kill him.' ''

That night, the family borrowed a shotgun from a friend, she said.

Sunday morning, about 11 a.m., she heard banging at her front door. She said she heard Speight yelling to her son.

``He said, `If you don't come out, we'll shoot through the windows.' ''

She called 911. Her son went to a second-floor bedroom and ripped a hole in a window screen. He stuck the shotgun out and told Speight to leave several times.

When he didn't, she said her son fired. Speight was unarmed when police spoke to him.
