BASE CLOSINGS: A 1995 SCHEDULE

Here is a tentative schedule for the 1995 round of military

base-closings, the fourth and final round scheduled:

September 1993: Questionnaires drawn up for base commanders.

November: Input received from major military commands.

March 1994: Questionnaires delivered to military bases.

August: Questionnaires due back to base-closing executive teams.

September: Executive teams begin analysis.

December: Base-closure selection process begins.

January 1995: President appoints new members of the Defense Base

Closure and Realignment Commission.

March 15: Defense secretary submits base-closure recommendations

to the new commission.

March 15-June 1: Commission holds hearings.

June 1: Commission submits its report to the president.

Three Navy installations in Hampton Roads were ordered shut or

relocated by the 1993 Defense Base Closure and Realignment

Commission. They are Norfolk Naval Aviation Depot, the Naval

Undersea Warfare Center in Suffolk and the Naval Electronics

Engineering Center in Portsmouth. Other local installations are

expected to be considered for closing by the 1995 commission.
