FISHING WRAPUP
Blustery weather over the Thanksgiving weekend convinced many anglers to scrub fishing trips they had planned for coastal areas of Virginia and North Carolina.
As expected, striped bass were caught around most bridges, piers and tunnels in the lower Chesapeake Bay, as well as in coastal sections of Northeastern North Carolina. A few also were beached in the surf of the Outer Banks.
But lunkers were scarce, with no rockfish reported that were big enough for citation awards from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.
Big bluefish were all but absent from the surf of the Outer Banks, where past Thanksgiving weekends have produced some spectacular action.
This time, only a couple of scattered catches were reported.
As mentioned, however, the windy weather of recent days convinced many would-be fishermen to find something else to do.
``It's been blowing hard along this stretch of beach ever since the hurricane (Gordon) nine or 10 days ago,'' said Terry Stewart of TW's Bait and Tackle at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks.
At any rate, here's a rundown of some recent action:
