The street widening and utility work on Hampton Boulevard between 38th Street and Old Dominion University (12 blocks) has been in progress for about 2 1/2 years. The inconvenience and lost revenue to businesses in the area, the disruption of traffic flow and the dangerous crossing situation for students and residents have made this project a nightmare.
In addition, the project cost has certainly greatly exceeded original estimates (a taxpayer's nightmare).
It is now long past the time for the Virginia Department of Transportation to do whatever it takes to get the job completed within the next 45 days.
