The Coast Guard cutter Bear leaves its base in Portsmouth earlier
this month for a 40-day patrol in the Caribbean. The crew of the
270-foot medium-endurance cutter will find the sailing smoother than
it was during the last patrol, when it rescued 399 people from rafts
and small boats at the height of the Cuban refugee crisis. The Bear,
with a crew of 106, is on patrol about 185 days a year.
