WEEKLY BRIEFING

WEEKLY BRIEFING

LIGHTED SHIP TOURS: The traditional holiday lighting of Navy ships will begin Saturday and continue nightly through Jan. 1 at Norfolk Naval Station and Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

Motorists interested in taking the free, self-guided tour at Norfolk Naval Station should enter through Gate 2 at the extreme north end of Hampton Boulevard between 6 and 9 p.m. and ask for a tour map. A similar tour is available at Little Creek during the same hours. Enter through any gate.

RECYCLING AWARD: The Naval Base Norfolk Commmand has been presented the Navy's Resource, Recovery and Recycling Program award for large installations, and the Naval Security Group Activity Northwest in Chesapeake received the same award for small installations.

The command was honored for recycling more than 19 million pounds of trash and saving $4.3 million in disposal costs.

STENNIS HALL: The Navy had a lot of new sailors needing a home on the Peninsula, and the Army had a home that was losing its soldiers. They got together and christened John C. Stennis Hall - named for the new aircraft carrier whose sailors will live in the three-story building at Fort Eustis while the ship is finished at Newport News Shipbuilding.
