BASKETBALL SEASON starts this week, and that can only be good news for the Eastern District.
Let them play football in Chesapeake and Suffolk and wherever else the playoffs continue.
Boys basketball is Norfolk's game, and this season should be no different.
Booker T. Washington, Maury and Granby will compete for the district's two region tournament berths while Lake Taylor and Norview break in new coaches.
The Bookers return three starters, led by All-Tidewater guard Kenny Brown. Booker T. went 18-5 last season and won the district regular-season and tournament championships before bowing to Indian River in the Eastern Region quarterfinals.
Maury also returns most of its cast, led by second-team All-Tidewater forward Shaun Jackson. The Commodores went 15-9 last season with three losses to region champion Churchland.
Granby defeated Booker T. and Maury once each last season in going 9-10. The Comets return 6-3 senior Shawn Hobson, the district player of the year.
Maury and Granby tipoff the season with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday nights at Maury. On Friday, the Comets meet Osbourn Park at 6 and Maury plays Stonewall Jackson at 7:30. the teams trade opponents on Saturday.
Booker T. also opens Friday, but on the road. The Bookers play at Wilson.
Lake Taylor is first out of the gate. The Titans play host to Princess Anne on Thursday.
Norview opens Saturday at home, also against Princess Anne.
Several top private schools also play this week in the Norfolk Christian Tip-Off Tournament.
The three-day events features four games games each day. Local teams are Atlantic Shores Christian, Greenbrier Christian, Portsmouth Christian and the host Ambassadors.
They are joined by defending champion The Christian Academy of Philadelphia, Lynchburg Christian, Delaware County Christian and Fredericksburg Christian.
The area wrestling season lifts off Saturday with the annual Titan Kickoff Classic at Lake Taylor. The Classic begins on three mats at 10 a.m. and features most of the region powers, including Great Bridge.
