RIDDICK'S FOLLY TO HOST VISIT WITH SANTA, CHILDREN'S LUNCH

Santa shows up at malls, in stores, in parks, offices and - yes - museums.

He is old enough to qualify as a museum showpiece, and Riddick's Folly will have the jolly old elf on display Dec. 10.

Otherwise, as usually happens in December, activities are few at area museums.

RIDDICK'S FOLLY

Saturday and Sunday - Riddick's Folly is part of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society tour. Desserts will be served in the basement.

Dec. 10 - A visit with Santa will feature lunch for children, served from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Photographs of visiting youngsters and Santa will be taken. The cost, $10 per child, includes two pictures and the lunch.

Dec. 22 - A gingerbread house workshop will be held at 2 p.m. The cost is $8 per child, $6 for families subscribing to the newsletter.

The exhibit, ``Mills Riddick, Family, Friends and Neighbors'' continues through April 16. It includes clothing, letters, personal papers, the family Bible, portraits and other items concerned with the man who constructed the building in 1837.

RAWLS MUSEUM

Today - The eighth annual Art Show and Sale begins today, continuing through Saturday.

Dec. 10 and 17 - Two separate drawing workshops for children ages 8 to 14 will be held. Gail Saunders is the instructor. The subject will be holiday drawings. Each child should bring a drawing pad and pencils. The cost is $8 for members, $10 for others.

SUFFOLK MUSEUM

Sunday - A one-woman show, ``Pain and Pleasure,'' features the works of Harriet McCullough and continues through Jan. 22. She was the winner of the spring juried show.

Dec. 6, Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 - Pastel classes for adults will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon. Two classes will be held each day, one for beginners, the other for the more experienced pastel enthusiast. Instructors are Debbie Hobbs and Frances Beamon. The cost is $30.

Dec. 7 - A Christmas calligraphy class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The instructor, Pamela Host, will explain how to beautify Christmas greetings with calligraphic writing. The cost is $30. Two pens, which can be kept, will be supplied.

Dec. 17 - Storyteller Lynn Ruehlmann will talk about ``Holiday Around the World.''

Dec. 17 - An ornament making workshop will be held before the storytelling performance. It is for children from 5 through 8 and begins at 10:30 a.m. Each participant will make two holiday ornaments from polymer clay and take them home after the performance. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $5.

ISLE OF WIGHT MUSEUM

The latest entry in the museum's ongoing exhibit in its Most Illustrious Citizen series is Lillian Crocker, nominated by her granddaughter. Items connected with the nominee are on display.

An exhibit spotlighting the Pacific Theater during World War II continues through next Wednesday.

An exhibit spotlighting the European theater during World War II continues through next Wednesday.

WAKEFIELD FOUNDATION

Tonight - ``Poetry on Porcelain II'' opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibit continues through Dec. 11. The artists are Jeannie May, Ana Guerrero, Helen McCoy, Kay Glenn, Midge Amos, Jean Payne, Becky Rickman, Isabel Escalona and Filipe Pereira.

A variety of Christmas ornaments, jewelry, hand painted dolls, boxes, pen trays and other items are on display. Larger items such as tea sets, vases, platters and pitchers also are part of the exhibit. The artists will be on hand to answer questions.
