PERFORM OR ELSE

Unlike the pundits, I don't pretend to know the reason that so many incumbents were thrown out of office. I prefer to believe, however, that in the case of U.S. Senate candidates, Virginians wisely chose a reputed philanderer over a bona-fide scoundrel in belief of the possibility of redemption for the former vs. the certainty that the latter would be encouraged by his success in exploiting fear and divisiveness.

Overall, the message for politicians seems to be: We no longer trust you to act in our interests. If you do not perform, we will replace you.

Postscript: Shame on the Richmond Times-Dispatch for endorsing a scoundrel. Shame on The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star for fence sitting. Remember that if good men do nothing, evil wins.
