BACK TALK

MIXED OPINIONS were apparent among our readers who responded to last week's Teenspeak question: ``Is it fair to offer minority scholarships, or do they lead to discrimination among students?'' Here are some comments:

No, it shouldn't matter what color you are. If you are smart and deserve it, you should be able to get a scholarship regardless of race. - David Kane, 14, eighth grade, Larkspur Middle School

No, all people are created equal. White Americans should have a chance at minority scholarships. After all, some white Americans are not able to afford college. - Barry McClendon, 14, eighth grade, Larkspur Middle School

Yes, it is fair to offer minority scholarships. They don't lead to discrimination among students. If anyone says it is not fair, they are wrong. There is no fairness in this. Minorities have gone through a lot of racism, and this is a means of getting even. - Chris Downing, eighth grade, Larkspur Middle School

No. Scholarships shouldn't be given for the color of your skin. It should be given for your grades. How successful you are in life depends on your grades, not the color of your skin. - Christine Keller, 15, 10th grade, Kellam High School

Yes. Minority-based scholarships can be a good ideal. I have won several based on me being an African-American, as well as scholarships based on merit. I was an honor student. I feel if I didn't get some of the scholarships I received, I wouldn't be as successful as I am today. I do think that some scholarships can create hostility toward other people because they think they have been discriminated against. They are going to be awarded scholarships that other people can't get. - Misti Goodson, 18, freshman at Old Dominion University by CNB
