EUCLID M. HANBURY

Euclid Murden Hanbury, 92, departed this life on December 1 at his residence. Born in Edenton, NC., he resided in Portsmouth for more than eighty years. He was a member of Monumental Methodist Church. He was the husband of the late Blanche Conwell Hanbury.

Mr. Hanbury succeeded his father as president of the Portsmouth Lumber Corp. until his retirement in 1962. For 32 years he was a director of the Merchants & Farmers Bank and was an honorary director of Dominion Bank. He was a former chairman of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority, past president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, and the Portsmouth General Hospital Board of Directors. He was a 32 degree mason and a member of the Tidal Wave Lodge 273 for seventy years and a charter member of the Portsmouth Scottish Rites Bodies.

Active in sailing events on the Chesapeake Bay for many years, he was a former member of the old Portsmouth Boat Club and a member emeritus of the Hampton Yacht Club. He was recognized for his contributions to the sport of racing with races in his honor at the Hampton Yacht Club and Christopher Newport College. The perpetual trophy for the annual Cock Island Race in Portsmouth is a tribute to the many he taught to sail.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Euclid M. Hanbury, Jr. of Belfast, Maine, and John Paul C. Hanbury of Portsmouth; a brother, C. Paul Hanbury of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Claudia Hanbury Bleecker, Deirdre Hanbury Baer, Randall Hanbury Perdew, Lucy Hanbury Johnson, Mary Ruffin Hanbury, and Euclid M. Hanbury III, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at Monumental Methodist Church on Sunday, December 4, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial gifts to the Christopher Newport Sailing Foundation, 50 Shoe Lane, Newport News, Va., 23606. The family will be at 208 Washington Street on Swimming Point and will receive in Hampton at the Hampton Yacht Club on Sunday between 5 and 7 pm. Snellings Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements.
