BROADCASTING PIONEER SAMUEL CAREY DIES

Samuel Sidney Carey, a pioneer of broadcasting in Virginia who founded one of Norfolk's older radio stations and went on to establish a Richmond television station, died of cancer Wednesday.

He was the father of Jane Gardner, an anchor at WTKR-TV in Norfolk.

Carey began his broadcasting career in 1939 at WSAL radio in Salisbury.

In 1942 he moved to Richmond as an announcer at WRVA radio and rose to program manager. He went on to launch WRVC radio in Norfolk, which is now WOWI, before moving to television.

In 1956, when television was still something of a novelty, he helped put what is now WWBT-TV on the air in Richmond.

Carey, who became station manager at WWBT-TV, stayed with the station until 1970, when he returned to Salisbury to become president of WBOC radio and television.

Carey was president of the Maryland, D.C. and Delaware Broadcasters Association and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was treasurer of the CBS Radio Affiliates Association when he retired in 1984. by CNB
