Keith and Beth Shera say they moved to the Outer Banks in part to escape the crime and violence of Northern Virginia.
But the Nags Head couple became victims of violence on Thanksgiving Day. Someone took a pet rabbit, Whitey. Its carcass was found the next day. The rabbit apparently was beaten to death, and its tail cut off. Another pet rabbit is missing.
``I could handle it a little better if the rabbit had just died,'' Keith Shera said. ``But the sheer brutality of this. . . . It's unbelievable.''
The couple has placed posters throughout Nags Head seeking information on the incident. Also, animal control officials in the town are investigating.
``We may not find out who killed Whitey,'' Beth Shera said. ``But maybe this will protect other people's pets. If they would kill a defenseless rabbit like that, what's next?''
