It was a ``David and Goliath'' situation waiting to happen. In the JV boys game, the 1A Camden County Bruins beat the 4A Northeastern Eagles. Then the Lady Bruins turned around and knocked off the Lady Eagles 60-54, much to the chagrin of Northeastern fans who at one point littered the court with debris.
Could the Camden boys pull off the trifecta?
Not!
Although the Bruins hung in for a quarter, the Eagles outscored Camden County 19-5 in the second quarter and breezed to a 67-45 win in a non-conference boys basketball game this past Tuesday night.
Trailing 15-6 in the first quarter after a lay-in by Northeastern center Anthony Poole, Camden jumped back in the game on a layup by Jason Staples and a layup and free throw by Britton Overton.
Leading 17-11 to start the second quarter, Northeastern took command on turnovers and rushed shots by Camden. The Eagles went on a 19-2 run until the last seconds of the half when Camden's Nick Williams scored on a layup at the buzzer to cut the Northeastern lead to 36-16.
Camden outscored Northeastern in the second half, but Eagles head coach Bobby Dunn rotated in substitutes late in the third quarter for the rest of the game.
Poole, who dominated under the boards, led the Northeastern attack with 18 points. Raronzee Hinton added 12 points for the Eagles.
Overton led the Camden scoring with 10 points and played well inside despite being hammered several times.
Dunn gave credit to the Bruins for keeping the game close in the first quarter but he said Northeastern's overall size gave it a bigger advantage. Despite leading the team in scoring, Dunn said that Poole could have played better.
Camden head coach Tim Brown said he requested the game be on the Bruins schedule so that he could show his players some of the best athletes in the area.
``I don't believe you'll get a better team in the area,'' Brown said. ``They were real good, all over the floor. I wanted our guys to see better teams and talented athletes. We just blew it in the second quarter. We played awful and forced a lot of shots. We got in the run and gun with them which we couldn't do.''
Camden may have one of the oddest schedules in all of North Carolina. Besides Northeastern, the Bruins play Mattamuskeet twice, then face Ocracoke twice during the conference season. The non- conference schedule also includes games against 2A Edenton and Currituck. by CNB
