HOT AT TOURNAMENT, ECSU COLD AT HOME AFTER DOING WELL TWO WEEKS AGO, THE VIKINGS GOT JITTERS AND LOST TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE.

Some cold shooting this past week made Elizabeth City State University's mens basketball team look a little bit too ordinary, at least compared to the tournament championship win at the West Chester University Tip-Off Tournament two weeks ago.

The Vikings began the weekend with a trip to the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic and proceeded to get blown out 82-53 by Gardner-Webb. The Vikings shot a paltry 25 percent from the floor, including a 2-for-15 performance by Ron Nowlin and a 2-for-12 showing by Jo-ve Ford.

Bernard Cooper led the Vikings' scoring with 14 points and Jermaine Smoake added 12 points.

Smoake salvaged a third-place finish for ECSU in the consolation game. His 3-pointer with six seconds to play sent the game into overtime and key buckets in the extra period helped ECSU to an 89-87 win.

Smoake finished the game with 24 points, Nowlin scored 19, and Cooper added 15. Smoake and Cooper were both named to the all- tournament team.

On Monday, ECSU's case of the shooting jitters came to the forefront once again as the Vikings fell 85-69 to Fayetteville State in Fayetteville.

The Vikings trailed 43-30 at the half and never could get back in the game. Overall, the Vikings shot just 38 percent.

Nowlin led the ECSU attack with 19 points and Ford added 10 points. by CNB
