Michael J. Glynn spends every day trouble-shooting in the transportation department at Smithfield Packing Co.
As transportation manager, he coordinates the 60 to 70 truckloads of meat that come out of the plant daily and travel to 48 states.
Glynn says much of his job involves matching meat orders to available trucks so they can leave the plant.
``It's lining up the orders sold, making sure they can be delivered in a timely fashion, and within the rules of the Department of Transportation,'' he says.
``You have to decide whether you want to use your trucks or an outside carrier. And that has to be checked with the number of people you have available to drive. Then, you got to get the meat loaded. And that's another department at Smithfield Packing.''
Glynn says his job also requires many problem-solving skills, such as what to do if a load of meat goes to the wrong destination.
``I put out fires all day long.''
