NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR COACH OF THE YEAR

Some of the very best bowling coaches of youngsters are at area centers and now's the time to gain recognition for them.

The Young American Bowling Alliance is getting ready to accept nominations for its 1995 YABA Coach of the Year.

Here's an opportunity for bowling lanes - and youth bowlers themselves - to show their gratitude for the diligent work of the local coaches.

Recently, Shirley Kline of Rudyard, Mont., was chosen as the 1994 Coach of the Year. Granted she has impeccable credentials: a coach for 34 years and a Hall of Fame member in the Montana Women's Bowling Association.

But across this area, there are dozens of coaches who can match those qualifications. And the large number of former youth league bowlers who now are the pacesetters in the adult leagues stand as a testimony to the instructions they received.

Nominations for next year's Coach of the Year are being taken until Feb. 15.

The YABA recommends local associations forward their best candidate's name and qualifications to YABA, 5301 S. 76th St., Greendale, Wisc. 53129-1192.

Information can be obtained by phoning Diane Stanislawski at (414) 423-3383.

One requirement is that the coach must have been an active participant in a YABA program for more than seven years.

Here's a chance for bowlers to gain national recognition for an outstanding and dedicated local youth coach.

Don't we have as much to offer as Rudyard, Mont.?

Bowler of the Week honors go to Rodney Moody, who fired a 300 game in the Military Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Military. Moody went on to a 745 series.

The 12-strikers are getting to be a habit for the smooth-rolling Moody, who notched a pair last year. The past season he was ranked No. 7 in the area with an overall 208 average.

This was the third center where he has posted a 300 game.

Tenpin topics: Scott Patterson had the thrill of rolling his first 700, posting 704 in the Masters League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. He's also an employee at that center. . . Another first-time 700 shooter was Jeff Hogue, who hit 705 in the Tuesday Mixed Majors at Plaza Bowl as he brought out a new ball. . . . Lorriane Poyner joined the Century Club with a 206 game, exactly 100 over her average in the Early Birds League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. Industrial League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. Snodgrass has a 179 average. . . . Kim Phillips continues to flirt with that ever elusive first 600 series. She has several series between 584 and 590 and pitched 594 in the Wednesday Nite Mixed League. . . . Jean Seifert chalked up a 254 game in the Seagate Colony League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Mitch Martin joined the Century Club with a 257 single in the Saturday Nite Live League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. Mitch has a 149 average. . . . Tom Garrett had a 192 triplicate in the Masters League. He has a 168 average. . . . Mike Martin boosted his 165 average with a 695 series in the Industrial loop. Ditto Michael Kirkman, who averages 134 and heaved a 577 series in the Tuesday Nite Mixers League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . The Charles Peete League came up with exactly one dozen series over 700 in a single night's action. . . . Other game gems this week: Jack Ange's 289 in the Rock Church Mixed League at Pinboy's of Military, Jim Marrion's 285 in the Keith Young Industrial at Pinboy's of Western Branch, Mike Olenik's 279 in the Monday Scratch Doubles at Pinboy's of Chesapeake and Bob Broussard's 278 in the Mixed Majors at Plaza Bowl. Lady blockbusters were Bettie Bradley with 267 in the Friday Mixers League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake and Monica Bauserman with 266 in the Friday Mid-Atlantic League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . Fran Sansome subbed in the Saturday Nite Live League at Plaza Bowl and fired a 245 game and 626 series.

Duckpin data: On a recent trip to the Connecticut and Massachusetts areas, George Smith tried his hand at candlepins and tenpins, as well as duckpins. ``It's fascinating bowling with the deadwood on the pin deck the way they do in candlepins,'' said Smith. ``But it's a tough game. I didn't break 100.'' . Deepest sympathy to Buster Knox on the loss of his wife. . . . Wedding bells will ring for three-league regular Wayne Haddock in June. . . . The Portsmouth Match Game Championship resumes today at Victory Lanes at 5 p.m. . his 185 game was overlooked in the rankings. Little guys aren't supposed to bowl such high games. Jason is a Victory Youth League bowler and probably the most avid fan the Deep Creek High School football team has. . . . Sylvia Hart tossed a 152 game and 407 set in the Monday Morning Mixed League. by CNB
