WILLIAM HOWARD SLATER

William Howard Slater, 63, of 553 Stafford Rd., Elizabeth City, died Friday night at 10:10 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Slater was a retired carpenter and a former employee of the Colonnas Shipyard in Norfolk, Va. He was the son of the late William J. and Marie Devine Slater and the husband of Mary Bisher Slater. He was a member of the VFW Post 6060, Coinjock American Legion Post 288 and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Mr. Slater was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army Air Corps.

Besides his wife, he is survived by seven daughters, Teresa Ridings and Cynthia Wallace, both of Virginia Beach, Mary Leckrone of Chesapeake, Tana Freel, Terry Rew, Teresa Hesseltine and Karen Ayola, all of Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Billy Slater of Des Moines, Iowa and Bobby Slater of Carson City, Nev.; one sister, Beverly Parker of Suffolk, Va.; one brother, Jack Slater of Des Moines, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Portsmouth, Va., by Chaplain Elwood Ritchie. Military Honors will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford's Northside Chapel, North Road St., Elizabeth City, Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
