Joseph Norman Riddick, 76, of the 400 block of Redwood Drive, a retired insurance manager, died Dec. 3, 1994, in Sebring.
Mr. Riddick was born in Hertford, N.C. He had retired from Citizens Home Insurance of Norfolk. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sebring, Fla. He was a former member of the Knights of Pythias Charity Lodge No. 10 and the Moose Lodge in Sebring. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a square dance caller and he originated the country and western band the ``Rhythmaires'' who were popular in the Norfolk area in the 50's and 60's. He also wrote the lyrics to the song ``Anniversary Memories.'' He also owned and operated ``Ye Olde Ham Shoppe'' in Nags Head, N.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Bessie White Riddick and Alonza M. Riddick Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia H. Riddick of Sebring; two daughters, Norma R. Burk and Lou R. Avallone, both of Virginia Beach; a son, Joseph A. Riddick of Norfolk; five sisters, Molly Hadwin of Pensacola, Fla., Betty Baines of Hobbsville, N.C., Pricilla Jones of Suffolk, Hannah Riddick of Mexico City, Mexico and Janice Fogarty of Knoxville, Tenn; a brother, Alonza Mack Riddick Jr. of Suffolk; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a stepson, Gene Rohr of Denver, Colo.; and a stepdaughter, Arlene Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Dr. Walker N. Stockburger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A visitation will be tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
