CURRITUCK GOLF PROJECT ON BOARD'S LIST TONIGHT

The first planned golf course community for Currituck County's Outer Banks will be discussed at a public hearing tonight at the courthouse.

Public comments on two requests from developers of the proposed Currituck Club are among numerous items to be considered by the new Board of Commissioners after a 7 p.m. induction of three commissioners - Owen Etheridge, Eldon Miller and Paul O'Neal.

Outer Banks developer Mickey Hayes is asking commissioners to change nearly 587 residentially zoned acres to a planned unit development. The new designation would allow for limited business, such as a hotel.

The Currituck Club, also known as The Currituck Shooting Club property, would include 476 single-family lots, 104 golf course villas, 56 patio homes, two commercial areas and four employee housing units.

The proposed site is west of N.C. 12 near Corolla's Pine Island development and a National Audubon Society bird sanctuary.

Several other controversial developments are again on the board's agenda.

These include the Dove Roost and The Plantations housing complexes in Moyock, and Dozier Acres in the nearby Crawford Township.

All three have undergone public scrutiny for their possible impact on already crowded schools and congested or deteriorating roads in the northern end of the county.

The continuation of hearings will allow new commissioners a chance to listen to residents and developers before making their decision.

``It's a matter of following all our legal requirements,'' said Jack Simoneau, director of planning and inspections.

Yet another controversial development scheduled for a public hearing at tonight's meeting involves a shopping center proposed for the Moyock area.

Acey Commercial Properties of Virginia Beach is asking for sketch approval and a special use permit for a shopping complex anchored by a grocery store.

Commissioners will base approval of the plan on how well the shopping center blends into the area and conforms to the county's long-range plans, among other criteria.

Some residents have raised issue with the impact that a chain supermarket and other stores might have on local merchants.

``The effect it might have on local businesses is not one of those criteria,'' Simoneau said. by CNB
