A longtime critic of the Dare County Board of Commissioners will become a member of the panel this morning before a vote on a controversial zoning request for a campground on Roanoke Island.
The newcomer, Democrat Shirley Hassell of Manns Harbor, has contended that the county's records were not open to the public. She defeated Chuck Elms for a seat on the commission.
She replaces Robert Williams of Manteo, whom she defeated in the Democratic primary.
Also today, the board is expected to vote on a proposed zoning amendment that would create a classification known as Conservation-Public Recreation. If the amendment is approved, Wallace Harvey proposes to build a campground on a 46-acre site on the north end of Roanoke Island.
Campground proponents argue that it would bring more tourist dollars to Roanoke Island, and in a constructive manner.
Opponents - including actor Andy Griffith, who has a home on the island - contend the campground will damage the fragile island environment, and lead to overcrowding.
Last month, a standing-room-only crowd attended a public hearing to voice opinions on the proposal.
The meeting starts at 9 a.m. by CNB
