The Suffolk and Portsmouth teachers who voluntarily stay after school one hour each week to help tutor middle-school children yearning to participate in Nighthawk basektball games (news, Nov. 29) are true champions.
Why should we be surprised that these students now ``more easily master'' their course work? Why are we amazed when ``students . . . are more pumped up during regular classes and routinely come to school prepared''? When you want a child to perform well, you find what motivates him or her and use that interest and ability to shore up weaker areas of performance.
As a former single parent whose son earned a complete college basketball scholarship through the help of caring teachers and coaches before the days of Nighthawk basketball, I will always be grateful to the individuals who took the time to help my son.
