BEACH WILL SPEND $1.9 MILLION TO REPAIR POOLS IN REC CENTERS

The city will spend $1.9 million to repair pools at three recreation centers. The City Council unanimously approved the expenditure Tuesday.

Equipment in the pool rooms has been rusting since the facilities opened. The problems, which do not pose health risks for swimmers, are most severe at the 4-year-old Great Neck Recreation Center, the oldest of the three.

Damage there includes extremely corroded light fixtures, ventilation ducts and motors. The other affected centers are the 2-year-old Bayside Recreation Center and the recently opened Princess Anne Recreation Center.

The city, blaming design flaws, sued Krummell & Associates, P.C., the architectural firm responsible for the centers.

The money the council authorized Tuesday will pay for repairs while the city awaits the results of its legal action.

The pools have been awash with controversy for years. A subconsultant was removed from the project in 1990 for writing design specifications that called for parts sold by a company run by his son and owned by his wife. by CNB
