BRIEFLY - SPORTS

BOXING: The Portsmouth Athletic Club is sponsoring another boxing show Friday at the Norfolk Elks Lodge No. 38 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10. For information, call the PAC gym at 399-8454 or the Elks Lodge at 461-6244.

The PAC boxing team rapidly is developing into the state's finest. In the last boxing show at the Norfolk Elks Lodge in November, the PAC's Chubby Ward emerged as a future Junior Olympic prospect.

The 15-year-old Ward, a welterweight, knocked out previously unbeaten Josh Smith of Norfolk in 1:11 of the third round.

PAC novice welterweight Germaine Green registered a first-round knockout over Fred Booth of Norfolk. The bout lasted 41 seconds. Green, a former track star at Wilson High School, showed power and hand speed in stopping the more experienced Booth.

Middleweight Kevin ``Choir Boy'' Johnson also posted a first-round knockout for PAC. He put down Norfolk's Tony Watts in one minute and 30 seconds.

A fourth PAC boxer, Michael Joiner, also chalked up a knockout victory in his cruiserweight bout with Rob Thompson of Colonial Boxing Club. The knockout came at 45 seconds into the second round.

Super heavyweight Al Lassiter of PAC won by walkover when four-time state champion James Johnson of Williamsburg failed to appear in the main event. Lassiter, a 290-pounder, is the 1994 Virginia Novice state champion.

YOUTH FOOTBALL: Local football teams and cheering squads turned in outstanding performances in the Twin City Classic Bowl at Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Olive Branch Bulldogs Pee Wee team defeated the previously unbeaten West Virginia Spartans, 12-6, and the Cradock Admirals Pee Wee team lost a thriller to the Toms River (N.J.) Indians, 8-7.

The Bulldogs, coached by Gene Jones, Jamie Brinkley, Arthur Eure and James Taylor, snapped a 10-game winning streak by the Spartans.

The Spartans jumped to a 6-0 lead on a 24-yard touchdown run but had the extra point kick blocked by Chad Taylor.

In the second quarter Olive Branch gained a 6-6 deadlock as quarterback Needham Jones scored on a 7-yard run. Olive Branch also missed the extra point.

With less than four minutes remaining and the Spartans driving, Olive Branch's Chris Delaney forced a fumble on the Olive Branch 46 and Adam Fly recovered for the Bulldogs.

Behind outstanding blocking by fullback James Taylor and solid line play, Olive Branch drove for the winning touchdown. Corey Wells, Fly and Brian Eure spearheaded the running with Eure scoring on an 11-yard effort.

Wells rushed for 55 yards and Jones netted 51. Chad Taylor had six solo tackles.

Other members of the Bulldogs included Michael Bright, Robbie Oliver, Daniel Askew, Richard Brinkley, Chris Delaney, Ryan Drake, Quenton Draper, J.J. Freedman, Robbie Gentry, Andy Gosselin, Bryan Laing, Brandon Wells, Ray Williams and Ricky Yancey.

Cradock maintained an edge over its New Jersey foe until the final period. The Admirals kept the ball throughout the opening quarter and had the game's first score on an 11-yard run in the second period by Wes Wesson.

A seven-yard touchdown run with seven minutes remaining in the game cut the Admirals' lead to 7-6 and a two-point conversion by Toms River produced the victory.

The Admirals had three potential scoring drives stopped inside the 20 by the Indians.

In cheering the Cradock Junior Pee Wee squad won first place in its division. Coached by Sherry Umphlett and Wendy Walters, the team is captained by Stephanie Johnson. Victoria Umphlett and Erin Smith are co-captains.
