HEALTH CENTER TO OPEN CLINIC IN SOUTHSIDE

The Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Community Health Center has reached agreement to lease a former grocery store at the intersection of Lincoln and Seventh streets in Southside to house a comprehensive clinic to treat the medically underserved in the city.

The health center, which was first proposed in 1992, is funded by a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service and will serve the needs of individuals who do not have access to adequate health care due to lack of transportation, low income, no insurance or who are underinsured.

The clinic is expected to open in late spring. It will provide routine office treatments, laboratory tests, X-rays, prenatal care, health education programs and limited pharmacy services.

Locating the clinic in Southside will provide access to medical treatment for persons who had previously used the city health department's general medical clinic, which closed four years ago. by CNB
