3 ARRESTED IN ATM HOLDUP

Police early Thursday used a photograph taken by the camera at an automatic teller machine during an armed robbery to track down and identify three juveniles whom they say held up a 21-year-old woman Tuesday night.

The three teenagers - one 15 and two 14 - were arrested in Newport News between 12:40 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. at different locations, said Patricia L. Mahaffy, spokeswoman for the Newport News Police Department.

Mahaffy said about a dozen people called on Wednesday after the photo taken at the ATM was circulated. The tips resulted in the youths being arrested.

Police said the teenagers approached the woman at about 6 p.m. as she withdrew money outside the Old Point National Bank at the corner of Harpersville Road and Warwick Boulevard. Two wore masks and had handguns. They entered the partially enclosed ATM with the woman while the third acted as a lookout.

The youths demanded the woman's money, then fled without harming her, Mahaffy said.

All three suspects were charged with robbery and a weapons violation. ILLUSTRATION: In the Newport News holdup, police say two teenagers robbed a
