WOMEN ARE PROGRESSING AT PROVOST LEVEL IN VA.

Women have been making inroads in higher education administration, at least at the No. 2 spot, in Virginia.

``I have been very impressed with the progress women have made in the academic vice presidential level'' in Virginia, said Margaret A. Miller, associate director of the State Council of Higher Education.

Five of Virginia's 15 state-supported four-year schools - or one-third - have female provosts, the equivalent of vice presidents of academic affairs. Most have been appointed since 1990.

The five women are:

Gillian Cell, College of William and Mary

Martha Dawson, Virginia State University

Jo Ann Gora, Old Dominion University

Grace Harris, Virginia Commonwealth University

Bethany Oberst, James Madison University by CNB
