U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb finished his re-election drive with total receipts of more than $5 million and unpaid bills approaching $200,000, his campaign treasurer reported Thursday night.
In papers filed with the Federal Election Commission, Robb detailed the financial bottom line on a campaign in which he broke all spending records for a Senate contest in Virginia, only to be outspent 4-to-1 by Republican nominee Oliver North.
Robb got 46 percent of the vote in defeating North, who got 43 percent, and independent J. Marshall Coleman, who got 11 percent.
Details of North's and Coleman's final financial reports were not available Thursday. North has acknowledged spending about $20 million and finishing his campaign about $500,000 in the red. He has appealed by mail to supporters nationwide for additional contributions.
Robb said he's collected $741,031 since Oct. 20, the date of his last report. He spent about $1.3 million in that period, much of it on television commercials.
