STUDENTS GET `NICE' REWARD FOR DECORATIONS

Yes, Virginia Beach, there is a Santa Claus.

Every kid knows that he keeps a list, and that he checks it twice to find out who's been naughty and who's been nice.

Informed sources report that 23 first-graders from Thalia Elementary School were recently put at the top of the ``nice'' list, a lengthy document known to hang on the wall of a workshop located in a remote section of the North Pole.

Apparently, efforts by the children to decorate the new Applebee's restaurant at Loehmann's Plaza recently did not go unnoticed by the portly man in red. The first-graders, along with teacher Pam Williams, adorned the front window as well as a Christmas tree in the entrance of the neighborhood grill with ornaments they had made themselves.

``We were so thrilled to be invited,'' said Principal Caryl Felty. ``We try to give to the community in any way we can because the community gives so much to us.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo by NANCY LEWIS
